DR&DM FICs speak at DOST-PCAARRD Training-Workshop

The Diploma in Research and Development Management (DR&DM) Faculties-In-Charge (FICs) served as resource speakers at the “Training-Workshop on Domain and Distinction of Research Management” on 21-22 March 2018 at the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna.

The training cum workshop was organized by DOST-PCAARRD in partnership with the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR), and Philippine Association of Research Managers, Inc. (PHILARM).

DR&DM FICs, Dr. Rogelio V. Cuyno, Dr. Melinda F. Lumanta (UP Open University Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs), Dr. Jaine-Cadoc Reyes (DR&DM Program Chair, and UP Los Baños College of Public Affairs-Institute for Governance and Rural Development Director), and Prof. Nelson Jose Vincent B. Querijero (UP Los Baños Human Resources Development Office Chief), shared their expertise on research management. Research managers from different government offices all over the country served as participants in the said event.

On the first day of the workshop, Dr. Cuyno gave an overview of research management and its mission, core values, and research strategies. Moreover, he also discussed the pillars of successful RDI. Dr. Lumanta also held a session on the same day with topics on “Managing Knowledge Workers”, and “Harnessing Creativity: Internal Environment, Processes/Dynamics in Research Organization”. Dr. Lumanta highlighted in her talk that research managers should manage their knowledge workers’ creativity and productivity. Video case studies entitled “Playing the Game” and “Harnessing Creativity through Productivity” were shown to assess the participants’ learnings from the session.

The sessions on the second day of the workshop were headed by incumbent DR&DM Program Chair (PC) Dr. Jaine Cadoc-Reyes and former DR&DM PC Prof. Nelson Jose Vincent B. Querijero. Dr. Reyes discussed “Managing Products for Research” focusing on Technology Assessment, Intellectual Property, Diffusion of Innovations, and Commercialization. She also showed a video case study entitled “Parable of the Box” to further enhance the participants’ understanding of the concept of technology commercialization. Prof. Querijero also showed a video case study entitled “Beyond Number People” which served as a supplementary material to his discussion on “Support System for Research Organization”. (ERBVeluz)

UPOU joins the Learning Visit of the Association of Schools of Public Administration in the Philippines (ASPAP) in Taiwan

The UPOU’s Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), through its Master of Public Management (MPM) Program, joined the learning visit of the Association of Schools of Public Administration in the Philippines, Incorporated (ASPAP, Inc.) in Taiwan held on 11-18 March 2018, in collaboration with the Edu-Connect Southeast Asia Association-Kaohsiung (ECSSA-Kaohsiung). The UPOU is a member of the ASPAP which is a non-stock, non-profit national organization of academic institutions all over the Philippines offering degree programs in public management/administration/governance.

Asst. Prof. Juvy Lizette M. Gervacio, Chair of the Master of Public Management (MPM) Program of FMDS and Mr. Larry N. Cruz, MPM Faculty In-Charge/Senior Lecturer participated in the learning visit which was organized by Asst. Prof. Gervacio in coordination with Dr. Eing-Ming Wu, ECSSA-Kaohsiung Executive Director.

The following ASPAP-member universities were also represented in the learning visit: Ateneo de Davao University, Mindanao State University, Nueva Vizcaya State University, UP National College of Public Administration and Governance, University of Santo Tomas, and UP Visayas.

Among the institutions visited by ASPAP in Taiwan are as follows: Formosa Social Innovation Development Institute; Yancheng Social Welfare Building, Kaohsiung City Government; Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation; National Taitung University; I-Shou University; Tunghai University; Soochow University; Shih Hsin University; and the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO). The highlight of the activity was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between ASPAP and Transparency International-Taiwan and between ASPAP and Taiwan Association for Schools of Public Administration and Affairs (TASPAA) which aims to foster more collaboration and cooperation among the various universities in the Philippines and Taiwan.

The learning visit allowed the delegates to observe the good practices of the local government of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Moreover, it allowed the participants to benchmark the academic offerings of public administration/management and governance. The delegates were also able to observe the physical and scholarly facilities and resources of Taiwan universities. They were also able to meet and discuss with the scholars and academics in public administration/management in Taiwan.

FMDS welcomes Kanazawa University interns

The Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), represented by Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Associate Professor under the Diploma in/Master of Environment and Natural Resources Management (MENRM) and Project Leader of the Youth for Ifugao Rice Terraces (Y4IRT), welcomed the students from Japan through the RP-Japan Forum for Kanazawa University Internship Program on 06 March 2018 at the Audio Visual Room, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.

A forum on the RP-Japan Internship program for Kanazawa University attended by students from Kanazawa University, University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) and research assistants from the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) was held on 06 March 2018. Dr. Koji Nakamura, visiting professor at FMDS and Project Leader of the Ifugao Satoyama Meister Training Program delivered a brief message, which was followed by a message about UPOU and Kanazawa University Exchange Program from Dr. Atsurou Tstsumi, Associate Professor and person-in-charge of Kanazawa University international student exchange program. Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Project Leader of the Youth for Ifugao Rice Terraces (Y4IRT) project, discussed UPOU’s involvement with the Ifugao community and Kanazawa University. Asst. Prof. Aurora V. Lacaste, Senior Project Team Member of the Youth for Ifugao Rice Terraces (Y4IRT) project on the other hand, presented a capstone project conducted with UP Rural High School students.

The forum also served as a venue for the students from Kanazawa University to introduce themselves by sharing their major and specialization, hobbies, interests and expectations while visiting the Philippines for internship. The students from Kanazawa University also had a time to interact with the UPOU students and FMDS research assistants through a group discussion where they shared stories and experiences on how they encourage youth in their areas to participate in sustainability and other environment-related activities. Trying balut proved to be a fun highlight of their experience with the students and research assistants in the event. (JFDePasion-Guevarra)
