MPM Program to hold Learning Visit and LTiO in Roxas City in November 2018
The UPOU-FMDS Master of Public Management Program (MPM) will conduct an observation tour/field exposure (learning visit) in Roxas City on 08-10 November 2018, in collaboration with Capiz State University (CapSU).
The activity shall involve visit to potential programs/projects and interview/dialogue with key informants in the Capiz Province and/or Roxas City government, and in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources; documentation of the event that may form part of the MPM teaching-learning materials consistent with UPOU’s niche as an Open and Distance eLearning (ODeL) institution; co-creation of knowledge in collaboration with CapSU through the conduct of public forum dubbed “Let’s Talk it Over” (LTiO) lecture series; and meet and greet of Faculty In-Charge, staff and students to discuss online course delivery.
The LTiO, which will serve as the highlight and culminating activity of the learning visit, will be conducted on 10 November 2018 from 9am to 12nn at the Conference Room of CapSU Main Campus. Titled “Developments in Public Administration and Governance: Issues and Challenges”, topics to be discussed are as follows:
- Knowledge Sharing and Co-creation through Learning Visits: The MPM Strategy by Asst. Prof. Juvy Lizette M. Gervacio
- Dark Green Campus: Diffusion of Policies towards Environmental Sustainability in Universities by Assoc. Prof. Jocelyn C. Cuaresma
- Cybersecurity in the Workplace by LTC Joey T. Fontiveros
- Governance and Managing Resources of Institutions by Asst. Prof. Ma. Dorothee J. Villarruz
The CapSU community including faculty, staff, students, and local government officials are expected to attend the lecture, while UPOU students will be watching the LTiO via web stream at http://networks.upou.edu.ph/
The event is in line with the UP Academic Program Improvement project, which generally aims to improve the syllabus/coverage and subject matter/content of the MPM courses.
Similar event had been successfully conducted by the MPM program in San Fernando, La Union; Baguio City; Nueva Vizcaya; and Legazpi City, Camarines Sur.
UPOU-FMDS Lecturers Awarded by Philippine Association of Social Workers, Inc.
Two UP Open University (UPOU) lecturers from the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) were awarded a Plaque of Recognition for their service to the public by the Philippine Association of Social Workers, Inc. (PASWI) on October 10, 2018 in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. PASWI is a national organization for professional social workers in the country which advocates for total human development.
Dr. Melba L. Manapol currently teaches SW 210 Social Administration and Development in the Diploma in/Master of Social Work (D/MSW) program of FMDS. Besides serving as lecturer, she is the Chairperson of the Social Work Department and a Professor at Ateneo de Davao University and the National Association for Social Work Education, Inc. (NASWEI) President.
Dr. Manapol’s public service leadership includes serving as resource person for Case Management Training for CSSDO, DSWD, Child Caring Agencies in Visayas and Mindanao, offering consultancy work for Strategic Planning and Project Review for Handicap International, MONKASPED and Compostela Valley Seniors Citizen Organization, module developer and trainer for capability building of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers and paraprofessionals on Case Management for the Protection of Children in Emergencies, trainer for Community Based Psychosocial Support Healing and Recovery Program at Bai Mai Surin Refugee Camp in Mae Hong Son, Thailand. She was also a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Social Work and Human Service Practice.
Dr. Manapol finished her Bachelor of Science in Social Work at Ateneo de Davao University and her Master of Social Work degree at the University of the Philippines Diliman. She earned her PhD in Educational Management also from Ateneo de Davao University.
Dr. Nicamil K. Sanchez taught SW 220 Social Work Theory and Practice for the D/MSW program of FMDS. Besides serving as a lecturer, he is also the CEO for Philippine Consortium for Social Welfare and Human Dev.
Previously, he has served as a social worker for the Philippine National Red Cross and as a social welfare officer for DSWD. He likewise taught at the University of the City of Manila, University of the Philippines Diliman, and at the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
As the National President of ACU Postgraduate Association, he has spearheaded “Book for A Cause,” which saw the donation of more than 20,000 books to daycare and rural schools in Payatas Quezon city, Basey Samar Elementary school, University of Southern Philippines, Panabo Elementary school, Western Mindanao State University, and University of Southern Philippines. He also organizes feeding programs in various day care centers. In his current post at the Philippine Consortium, he donates to charitable institutions for every business transaction.
Dr. Sanchez took his Bachelor of Science Major in Social Work degree at the University of the City of Manila and his Master in Public Management degree at the Development Academy of the Philippines. He took up post graduate studies in Gerontology and Geriatrics at the University of Malta European Centre of Gerontology and Geriatrics and was an academic visitor at the Oxford University Institute of Population Ageing in United Kingdom. Writeshop held in preparation for UPOU Master of R&D Management Program
UP Open University’s Diploma in R&D Management (DR&DM) program gathered experts in research and development (R&D) management for a writeshop to upgrade and update its current Diploma in R&D Management (DR&DM) program and propose a Master’s program in the same field. Held on 10-11 September 2018, DR&DM faculty members under the UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies met in Los Banos, Laguna to review the program in the light of the expressed needs of its target learners and recent developments in the field.
Attending the workshop were Dr. Melinda Lumanta, Dr. Jean Saludadez, Dr. Primo Garcia, and Dr. Rogelio Cuyno from UPOU; Dr. Danilo Cardenas and Dr. Noel Catibog from the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD); Dr. Susan Bacud, Dr. Ana Quimbo, Dr. Jaine Reyes from UP Los Banos, and Asst. Prof. Glen Imbang from the UP Diliman Technology Management Center.
Dr. Jaine Reyes, Program Chair for the UPOU DR&DM program, explained the rationale and mechanics of the writeshop. According to Dr. Reyes, the MR&DM Writeshop was held to define how the program and courses under it will be administered. Dr. Reyes also recounted the needs assessment of potential R&D managers tackled at the DR&DM One-Day Symposium on 05 September. She also explained the learner preferences, interests and needs that led to the proposal for the development of master’s program in R&D Management.
Part of the writeshop was a discussion about the revision of existing courses under DR&DM and the institution of new courses for the Master’s program. The participants grouped themselves according to the areas of studies to develop the outlines and proposed content of the revised and new courses. Areas of studies included (1) Regulatory Environments, Compliance, Ethical and Legal Issues; R&D Leadership and Organizational Structures, Relations, and Processes in R&D Systems; and Finance Administrative and other Support Systems for R&D; (2) Creativity in R&D; Strategic R&D Management; (3) Intellectual Property Rights Management in R&D Organization; Technology Commercialization; Technology Forecasting and Evaluation; (4) Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods in R&D Management Studies; (5) R&D Project Planning and Management; S&T Policy Analysis; S&T Policy; and (6) Problem Solving and Decision Making in R&D Management.
As a result of the writeshop, the participants agreed to submit a proposal for the revision of the DR&DM program and institution of the MR&DM program to be submitted to existing university channels for approval. This initiative is supported through a project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD). DMSW Comprehensive Exam
This is a gentle reminder for DMSW Comprehensive exam takers who finished all 39 units (MSW) and 33 units (DSW) last 1st semester AY 2018-2019. You should be enrolled for residency this 2nd semester before taking the exam on May 6, 8, and 10, 2019.
