Course Title: Music in the ASEAN Community

Course Description: A survey of the many varieties of music in the ASEAN region focusing on musical exchanges from ancient times to the present and highlighting the achievements of the ASEAN communities for the past 45 years in the field of music and the performing arts.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Understand wide array of artistic and musical events that had been transpiring within the region over the past 45 years;
2. Assess achievements of the emerging musical genres; and
3. Critique the aesthetics of these musical genres resulting from the interactions of the impact on traditional societies of new musical networks; the effects of globalized music industries and music loss in many societies; and the new quest for artistic expressions.
