Mr. Aaron Joseph Castaño, a candidate for graduation from the Master of ASEAN Studies (MAS) program of the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), recently represented the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) at the 2025 Wenzao International Conference on Southeast Asian Studies (ICSEAS) held on 16–18 October 2025 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Mr. Castaño presenting his Master’s thesis at the 2025 Wenzao ICSEAS.
Presenting the results of his thesis titled “The Chairman’s Statements as Political Discourse: An Examination of ASEAN’s Pragmatism in the South China Sea Tensions,” Mr. Castaño examined how ASEAN Chairman’s Statements shape regional identity, guide institutional direction, and reflect the organization’s pragmatic approach to the South China Sea issue.

In his presentation, he discussed how chairman-level rhetoric enhances understanding of ASEAN Centrality and the organization’s efforts to maintain stability amid the diverse political positions of its member states. His study provided a lens that contextualizes ASEAN’s diplomatic and strategic posture as a means of preserving cohesion, promoting peaceful dialogue, and strengthening the organization’s credibility and central role in regional affairs through its discursive approach.
In addition, Mr. Castaño published a chapter in the book Southeast Asia: Interests and Discontents, released by Wenzao Ursuline University Press. He co-authored the chapter “Discovering Transformational Leadership in the Post-Pandemic Era: A Political Discourse Analysis of the Campaign of the Vice President of the Philippines, Leni Robredo.”

Mr. Castaño’s co-authored chapter featured in the book Southeast Asia: Interests and Discontents.
Mr. Castaño’s participation in ICSEAS and his scholarly contributions also align with the University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His work supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by advancing research and academic engagement in ASEAN studies, and contributes to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) through analyses that deepen understanding of regional governance, diplomatic practices, and the role of institutions such as ASEAN in promoting stability and cooperation.
