The Continuing Education Program (CEP) of the University of the Philippines Open University’s Faculty of Management and Development Studies (UPOU-FMDS) conducted a 5-day live-in Training Course on Futures Thinking and Knowledge Management (FT & KM) for the faculty and staff of the Ifugao State University (IFSU) and it’s Local Government Unit’s stakeholders on 11-15 September 2023 at the Centennial Center for Digital Learning (CCDL) Auditorium, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.
The program commenced with an opening ceremony which was graced by the training’s esteemed resource persons, facilitators and officials of IFSU. It started with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem followed by the UPOU and FMDS Audio Visual Presentations. Dr. Alexander G. Flor, UP Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the UPOU’s Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) gave the welcome message on behalf of Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Professor and Dean of FMDS while Dr. Leo Mendel D. Rosario, Assistant Professor of FMDS and FT & KM Training Coordinator, delivered an overview of the entire 5-day training course.
The first day of training started off with the lecture on “Futures Thinking” presented by Dr. Diego S. Maranan, Dean of FICS. Dr. Melinda F. Lumanta, Professor and former Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, shared the UPOU’s narratives as she tackled the topic on “University of the Future (UoF)”. Dr. Rosario, on the other hand, discussed his insights on “Strategic Foresight” complemented by a brainstorming session with the training participants. Day 1 concluded with a short review of all the topics tackled.
On the second day, Dr. Flor gave an extensive discussion on “Anticipatory Research Methods”. In the afternoon session, Dr. Emily M. Amoloza, Assistant Professor of FICS talked on the topic “Demystifying Knowledge Management” followed by the training on “Research, Planning and Designing Indigenous Knowledge Management System (IKMS) with Dr. Flor as the resource person. To conclude the Day 2 training sessions, Dr. Rosario did a brief recap to highlight the critical information imparted by the speakers.
On the third day, Dr. Flor continued his discussion on “Research, Planning and Designing Indigenous Knowledge Management System (IKMS)”. He gave another lecture on “Using Airtable as Knowledgement Management Tool” in the afternoon session. Ms. Gian Rose D. Cerdeña and Ms. Maria Paula T. Bautista, FICS Research Assistants (RA) served as facilitators during the lecture and practicum.
On Day 4, Dr. Flor gave an overview on “Indigenous Knowledge Capture” followed by a series of talks on Knowledge Capture through Mobile Videography. Mr. Bernabe M. Remoquillo served as the resource person for the training on “Indigenous Knowledge Video Capture Process” while Mr. Lexter J. Mangubat, Deputy Director of the UPOU’s Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning (CODTL) tackled the topic on “Audio Recording Using Mobile Phone”. Mr. Alejandro Zamora, CODTL Staff and Ms. Noreen Dianne S. Alazada, FMDS RA served as workshop facilitators to assist the participants in the planning, tasking and preparing for their IK Video Capture.
On the fifth day, participants further expanded their knowledge on Mobile Videography with lectures focusing on the editing, assembly and uploading of video output. Mr. Mangubat shared his insights and best practices on “Uploading Videos on Youtube”. Mr. Zamora then gave a lecture-workshop on “Video Editing Using ShotCut”. The remaining time in the afternoon was devoted to the presentation of trainees’ output where they applied their learnings while showcasing their rich culture and traditions.
During the closing ceremony, Dr. Flor presented the forty (40) course completers preceded by the awarding of certificates and tokens of appreciation to the resource persons and facilitators. Each completer received three (3) certificates representing the three (3) modules/micro credential courses covered in the training. Dr. Ricardo T. Bagarinao, Director of CODTL, gave the closing remarks while Ms. Mary Grace C. Perez, FMDS Project Staff, served as the master of ceremonies.
