The UP Open University Faculty of Management and Development Studies held a Let’s Talk it Over (LTIO) Forum titled “HR of the Future” on 11 December 2024 at the UPOU Audiovisual Room and online via Zoom. The forum was hosted by the FMDS Master of Public Management Program in partnership with the FMDS Public Service Committee.

Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Dean of UPOU FMDS, welcomed all participants, especially the students who are joining online. She applauded the efforts of the FMDS MPM program for organizing the event. She added that the forum addressed how human resource management could adapt to the advancements in AI, automation, and data analytics that are reshaping industries.

Three experts shared their perspectives on the role and future of human resources in the Private, Public, and Voluntary sectors. Ms. Florence “Flo” Joyce Rivera is the president of Travelbug World Consultancy and Travel Services, Inc., and the National President of NAITAS. She has over 20 years of professional experience in management, training, and human resources. In her presentation, “ The Human-Tech Revolution: Skills and Strategies for the Jobs of the Future,” she discussed HR in the private sector.

The second speaker is Ms. Lianne Angelico Depante, a Senior Lecturer with the FMDS MPM Program and a PhD candidate at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Depante tackled HR in the Public Sector with his presentation titled “What Does It Mean to Be a 21st-Century Public Servant in the Philippines? Some Guideposts in Building State Capacity and Reclaiming our Future.”

The last speaker is Mr. Brian Carlo Hipolito, Senior Human Resources Officer of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) based in Beijing, China, with more than 12 years of experience in Human Resources professionals recruiting global talents for international organizations. Mr. Hipolito explained in detail about HR in the Future in voluntary sectors. His presentation is titled “Shaping the Future of Work in the Nonprofit Sector: Skills, Sustainability, and Human-Centric HR.”

All speakers provided specific details and data regarding the growth and gap in human resource requirements in the country and presented their take on how the private, public, and voluntary sectors could adapt to the changes brought by technology. Each one advised on how to grow and stay relevant in the age of artificial intelligence. Ms. Rivera advised, “Find out what you are good at and intersect that with what you want for the future. Be kind to yourself, start where you can, and grow from there. ” Mr. Depante shared how he found his passion in development governance when he took MOOCs and was mesmerized by them. Mr. Hipolito advised the audience to “commit more mistakes, but not repeat them. It will make you learn and make you more resilient. Don’t be afraid to explore, and do not box yourself.”

The event was closed by Asst: Prof. Regina Mendoza-Armiendo, Program Chair of the Master in Public Management and FMDS Public Service Committee Chair. Ms. Mary Grace Perez, FMDS CEP Support Staff, served as the event’s host.
