The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Management & Development Studies recently held an initial meeting with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development’s (DHSUD) Environmental, Land Use and Urban Planning and Development Bureau (ELUPDB) on 1 March 2024 at the DHSUD Building, UP Diliman, Quezon City. The meeting aimed to explore a potential collaboration to develop an updated curriculum for the UPOU’s Diploma in Land Use Planning (DLUP) program..
The meeting was attended by Dean Joane Serrano, Asst. Prof. Milben Bragais, and Ms. Janelle Ebron from UPOU, along with Environmental Planners Ibani Padao, Roberts Mariñas, Mylene Rivera, Laarni Magayanes and Mic Ivan Sumilang from DHSUD.
The collaboration also aims to include the development of micro-credentials, which can provide specialized skills and knowledge in specific areas of land use planning. This initiative aligns with the goal of enhancing the skills and competencies of professionals in the field, ensuring that they are equipped to address the evolving challenges of urban and regional development in the Philippines.
To facilitate this collaboration, UPOU has outlined several action points, including the development of micro-courses, identifying experts to address stakeholders’ needs, bridging gaps in law practice, forming partnerships with other National Government Agencies (NGAs), and providing necessary materials for the partnership.
Meanwhile, DHSDU will provide a needs assessment to UPOU DLUP, list what resources and expertise they can provide, and create a core competency framework to guide the development of the curriculum. This partnership aims to enhance the practical relevance of land use planning education and contribute to sustainable urban development in the Philippines.
