As the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) heeds the call to action for a sustainability campus and wraps up its celebration of the Philippine Environment Month 2024, carrying the theme “Our Environment. Our Future,” the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) will host a hybrid talk on Sustainability and Regenerative Agriculture.
With nearly five years remaining until the United Nations Social Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 target year, the world is at a critical point in addressing the challenges of climate change, land degradation, and severe drought, among other issues. This critical moment calls for both reflection and urgent action. It is significant to bring the benefits of sustainability to the roles of UPOU, as a university, through public service and research thrusts. Today, it is believed that sustainability has become imperative and not merely a choice. Organizations might increasingly find themselves at a disadvantage with an absence of adopting ethical practices. This situation underscores why it is important to integrate sustainability in the cornerstone of academic institutions. We know how to solve these challenges, but we need collective willpower, effective leadership, and hard work to do so.
This talk will feature the renowned economist and author, and the current Vice President for Environmental and Social Leadership and Director of Graduate Programs in Sustainability at Bard College in New York, Dr. Eban Goodstein. His discussion will inspire a deeper understanding of how sustainable practices and regenerative agriculture can positively impact our environment, communities, and future generations. By exploring them together, we empower communities and individuals to become agents of change, fostering a collective commitment to responsible stewardship of our planet.
Catch the discussion on-site at the UPOU Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna and via Zoom on 27 June 2024 at 2:00 PM (PST). Students are highly encouraged to attend on-site to interact with Dr. Goodstein and discuss their pressing sustainability-related concerns.
