On 8 October 2024, the University of the Philippines Open University-Faculty of Management and Development Studies (UPOU-FMDS) held another successful session of its mentoring program, Feeding MinDS titled “An Introduction to Social Network Analysis,” conducted both in-person at the Teaching and Learning Hub Conference Room and online via Zoom.
The session featured Dr. Jabez Joshua Flores, a seasoned expert in social network analysis (SNA), as the resource person. Dr. Flores provided an engaging introduction to SNA, explaining its core concepts and applications through a case study of the Permaculture Network of the Philippines. He highlighted how SNA can be used to examine the structure and relationships within networks, where nodes represent actors, agents, or ideas, and edges signify the connections between them.
Following the lecture, FMDS faculty and staff participated in a hands-on workshop. Participants were tasked with mapping out the relationships between colleagues present at the event, allowing them to apply SNA techniques to better understand internal communication and collaboration patterns. The interactive session facilitated deeper engagement, enabling participants to explore the potential of SNA in fostering stronger connections within FMDS.
The session was well-received by participants, who appreciated the opportunity to deepen their understanding of social networks and their relevance in various professional contexts. The Feeding MinDS program continues to nurture FMDS faculty and staff by offering insightful sessions that contribute to their professional growth and development.
The event is in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning for all.
