The Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) took significant steps toward sustainability with the development of UPOU’s Institutional Waste Management Plan (IWMP) in collaboration with the Diploma in Land Use Planning (DLUP) students.
The IWMP contains the (a) characterization and projection of wastes; (b) proposed programs, projects, protocols, and policies for the management of the university’s solid wastes, electronic wastes, and condemned properties; and (c) initial design for an improved Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
The DLUP team facilitated consultation workshops, waste characterization and analysis study, key informant interviews, and site analysis during the 1st Semester of AY 2024-2025. The DLUP team comprised Mr. Teodorico Collano Jr., Ms. Catherine Larracas, Arch. Jose Marco Alegre, Engr. Rachel Avila, For. Joana Iris Bolaños, and L. Arch. Rosette Resurreccion. They were assisted by their Faculties-In-Charge (FICs), Asst. Prof. Remsce Pasahol and Asst. Prof. Milben Bragais. They were primarily assisted by the university’s Campus Development and Maintenance Office (CDMO) and Supply and Property Management Office (SPMO). Representatives from the other UPOU administrative and academic units, students, and municipal government were also engaged in the IWMP formulation.
Building on the outcomes of the data-gathering activities and planning workshop, the IWMP was formally presented on 16 December 2024. The presentation provided an opportunity to share the comprehensive plan with the broader university community, validate its contents, and gather constructive feedback. The event emphasized the importance of aligning the IWMP with institutional objectives, fostering environmental stewardship, and ensuring the plan addresses the needs and priorities of the stakeholders.

As a significant outcome of the event, the UPOU Institutional Waste Management Strategic Framework Plan 2025–2031 was introduced. This framework will serve as the roadmap for implementing sustainable waste management practices, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility across the university.
The IWMP directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. These efforts reaffirm UPOU’s commitment to promoting sustainability and resilience while fostering a collaborative environment where its community can actively contribute to achieving these global objectives.
