Master in Nursing Education

Program Description

The Master in Nursing Education program is a 30-unit professional graduate program that prepares nurses to assume the roles of teacher, good clinician, and leader manager in higher education institutions. The program will be jointly offered by UP Manila (UPM) College of Nursing and UPOU Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS)  delivered in a combination of face-to-face and online modes.

With this program, nurse educators can perform different roles in higher education institutions. The roles contributed to the framing of the program outcomes.  The educator role demonstrates varied skills in different educational contexts: curriculum development, clinical teaching and supervision, classroom teaching, laboratory and practicum teaching, application of knowledge of the learning process, and management of the learning environment. This role is supported by being a good clinician knowledgeable of the subject matter with the ability to communicate this knowledge to students. The roles also focus on skills related to professionalism, being a change agent, lifelong learning, collaboration, and communication, and the values essential for the full demonstration of the nurse educator role. Educating future nurses depends on the ability to interact and adjust to many diverse conditions and challenges, helping them to enact and enhance the best practices in teaching.

Program Goals

At the end of the program, graduates can:

  1. Perform skills relevant to curriculum design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and management based on contemporary educational theories, principles, and models
  2. Facilitate learning through the application of theoretical concepts among diverse learners with different learning needs and styles
  3. Maintain advanced knowledge and skills in the theory and practice of nursing
  4. Demonstrate professionalism and values in all responsibilities in the practice of nurse education

Practicum

Practicum components are an essential aspect of the Master in Nursing Education program, offering nurses valuable opportunities to apply teaching concepts in real-world settings. With the exception of N220, all courses require either 64 or 128 practicum hours, while N219.3 entails a more extensive commitment of 192 practicum hours. These experiences enable nurses to effectively develop and refine their instructional skills.

These teaching practicum requirements enable nurses to apply evidence-based teaching strategies, adapt to diverse learning needs, and build confidence in facilitating learning too. Through experiences in curriculum implementation, lesson planning, and classroom engagement, nurses enhance their leadership skills and deepen their understanding of effective education practices.

Comprehensive Examination

The Master’s program follows a non-thesis track, emphasizing the application of knowledge in professional practice. As part of the program requirements, students must complete a capstone project, compile a professional portfolio, and pass a comprehensive examination, as mandated by CHED Memorandum Order No. 15, Series of 2019.

The comprehensive examination is administered at the end of the program, after all courses have been successfully completed. This critical assessment serves as a culminating evaluation of the student’s depth of knowledge, critical thinking, and ability to integrate theoretical and practical concepts across the curriculum. Aligned with the Philippine Qualifications Framework (PQF) Level 7 standards for postgraduate education, the exam ensures that students demonstrate mastery in specialized knowledge and skills, engage in research-informed practice, and address complex professional challenges.

This assessment supports the program’s objective of developing highly skilled nurse educators capable of elevating the quality of nursing education and practice.
