Dr. Maribec Campos, Faculty of Management Development Studies Senior Lecturer and SP 290 adviser under the Master of Environment and Natural Resources Management (MENRM) program recently participated in the 21st International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET) Conference on 15-19 July 2024 in Penang, Malaysia. With the theme “Aquatic Food Systems in the Blue Economy”, the conference is in contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Under Water.
Dr. Campos presented two significant research papers, highlighting her work on fisheries and marine resource conservation. Her first presentation, titled “Climate Change Adaptive Mechanisms for the Conservation of ‘Sinarapan,’ the Smallest Commercial Fish in the World,” focused on strategies to protect “Sinarapan” (Mistichthys luzonensis) from climate change. This research emphasizes the importance of adaptive conservation methods to ensure the survival of this unique species.
The second presentation, “Economics of Protected Sea Cucumber Farming in the Philippines,” explored the economic benefits and sustainability of sea cucumber farming within marine protected areas. Dr. Campos’ study provides insights into balancing economic development and environmental conservation in the Philippines’ marine sector.
As Executive Committee Member of IIFET, Dr. Campos represents Asia and the Pacific. She currently holds this position and also from 2010-2014.
