Rex Marion C. Laguerta, a Master’s graduate of the ASEAN Studies Program at the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS), presented his research at the 47th Federation of ASEAN Economic Associations (FAEA) Annual Conference, organized by the Economic Society of Thailand. The event took place on 22-23 January 2025, at the Emerald Hotel in Bangkok.

With the theme “Sustainable Transformation of ASEAN Economies Under Major Challenges: Climate Change, Geopolitical Conflicts, Digital Technology, Aging, and ASEAN Centrality,” the conference provided a platform for economists, policymakers, academics, and researchers to discuss pressing regional and global issues affecting ASEAN member states.

In the panel sessions, Mr. Laguerta discussed the findings of his Master’s thesis in his presentation titled “Coast to Coast: Comparing the Philippine and Vietnam South China Sea (SCS) Conflict Management Strategies.” Through his comparative analysis of the strategies of the two claimant states, he was able to provide recommendations on conflict management in the SCS issue, highlighting the need for deepening collaboration, creation of a code of conduct, and strengthening ASEAN mechanisms. Mr. Laguerta’s research exemplifies this commitment by advocating for peaceful and diplomatic approaches to resolving maritime disputes in the region.
