Under the project titled “Enhancing the Sustainability, Profitability, and Inclusiveness of Coffee Value Chains Involving IP Communities: The Case of Kiangan and Asipulo, Ifugao and Patikul, Sulu,” the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) formalized a partnership with Mindanao State University (MSU)-Sulu in 2024 to strengthen the implementation of research and development initiatives on coffee value chains. The collaboration supports the effective conduct of project activities, with the goal of promoting sustainable, profitable, and inclusive coffee value chain in partner communities particularly in Patikul, Sulu.

From 16 to19 May 2026, the coffee project team, composed of Project Leader, Dr. Joane V. Serrano, Co-Project Leader, Dr. Sherry B. Marasigan, and Project Technical Assistant, Ms. Mary Grace Q. Campollo, together with the resource persons, Ms. Janele Ann Belegal and Ms. Cherry Rose Urriquia, visited Sulu to present the project’s final output, specifically the Inclusive Coffee Value Chain Intervention Model tailored to the needs and context of the Sulu coffee industry.

As part of the project activities, Dr. Serrano met with the Chancellor of MSU–Sulu, Prof. Nagder J. Abdurahman, to discuss the project’s accomplishments and explore opportunities for sustaining the partnership through future collaborative initiatives aimed at strengthening the coffee industry in Sulu. Their discussion also highlighted potential areas for cooperation on other academic, research, and community development endeavors between the two institutions.

During the meeting, Chancellor Abdurahman expressed his appreciation for the academic programs and innovative delivery systems of the UPOU. He likewise encouraged MSU–Sulu faculty and staff members to pursue academic and professional development opportunities through UPOU programs that align with their respective fields of expertise. Such initiatives promote accessible, flexible, and high-quality learning opportunities for individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge, skills, and professional credentials while continuing to serve and contribute to their local communities.

This initiatives supports the SDG Goals 04 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
