The Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) of UP Open University (UPOU) conducted a Let’s Talk it Over lecture on Tree Nurturing last 20 June 2017. The lecture was part of the “Ugat” 4th Wood Carving Competition and Exhibit which is also in celebration of the University of the Philippines’ 106th foundation.

Held at UPOU Community Hub, the guest speaker for the lecture series was Dr. Armand Palijon who shared his expertise on proper planting and taking care of trees to the attending wood carvers hailing from Paete, Laguna; Guagua, Pampanga; Hungduan, Ifugao; and Palawan. He discussed the different trees which woodcarvers in the Philippines commonly use as well as its natural habitat. According to him, due to the declining number of trees commonly used for woodcarving, woodcarvers are now looking for alternative raw materials to use such as fruit bearing trees or even wood taken down by natural calamities such as storms or man-made activities such as the prolific road widening projects. Earlier in the morning, Dr. Palijon also conducted a tree planting demonstration of native tree saplings which he donated through an activity spearheaded by FMDS and participated by UPOU officials, faculty, and staff.

Dr. Primo G. Garcia, FMDS Dean and Chair of the Cultural Committee, awarded the certificate of appreciation and token to Dr. Palijon. The LTIO lecture series of FMDS is regularly organized to discuss diverse issues that affect society and serve as an avenue for development practitioners, academicians and researchers to interact with the community.
