On 21 September 2024, the University of the Philippines Open University-Faculty of Management and Development Studies (UPOU-FMDS) hosted its Faculty Orientation for the First Semester and Trimester Faculty-in-Charge (FICs) in a hybrid format at the Audiovisual Room, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna, and via Zoom. The event was attended by a total of 33 FICs, with 10 in-person and 23 online.
The orientation aimed to familiarize FICs with the various support channels available at FMDS, the significance of Online Distance e-Learning (ODeL), and the role of quality assurance in education.
The event commenced with a welcoming message from Prof. Joane V. Serrano, Dean of FMDS. This was followed by an audio-visual presentation that introduced FMDS, its faculty, Research, Extension, and Professional Staff (REPS), and administrative staff members, as well as its services. The orientation also featured interactive introductions from each FIC, fostering a collaborative atmosphere among participants. Assistant Professor Lorena Jean D. Saludadez, Chair of the ASEAN Studies Graduate Program, led a discussion on ODeL, focusing on the critical role FICs play in creating effective course sites. Building on this, Assistant Professor Ria Valerie D. Cabanes, Chair of the Master of Arts in Nursing program and Quality Assurance (QA) Officer of FMDS, emphasized the importance of quality assurance in academic programs. She highlighted how adherence to quality standards can enhance students’ credibility as they enter the workforce.
An open forum moderated by Ms. Noreen Diane S. Alazada, University Research Associate and facilitated by Assistant Professor Saludadez and Assistant Professor Cabanes, allowed FICs to share insights and suggestions for enhancing their teaching practices. The Faculty Orientation was formally closed by Assistant Professor Lloyd Lyndel P. Simporios, Secretary to the Faculty of FMDS.
In line with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality Education, FMDS reaffirms its commitment to providing inclusive, accessible, and equitable education. The orientation equipped FICs with the knowledge and support necessary for achieving academic success and delivering high-quality education to their students.
